Breathing Air Quality Norms
In Germany, quality norms for breathing air are laid down in the DIN EN 12021 (former DIN 3188) norm, which specifies minimum levels of purity.
Purity is measured with respect to:
noxious gases, such as
- vapours
- suspended particles
Maximum level of carbon monoxide (CO):
≤ 30 ml/m³ at 1 bar absolute (stricter norms apply for dive depths beyond 50 metres)
Maximum level of carbon dioxide (CO2):
≤ 800 ml/m³ at 1 bar absolute (stricter norms apply for dive depths beyond 50 metres)
Maximum water residue:
Water content at 200 bar: max. 50 mg/m³ at 1 bar absolute
Water content at 300 bar: max. 35 mg/m³ at 1 bar absolute
This air quality norm is geared towards divers and commercial breathing air applications.
